About this position
The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Villigen, Switzerland, is recruiting a Postdoctoral Fellow in Thermodynamic Modelling and Equations of State for its Laboratory for Waste Management (LES).
The postdoctoral researcher will develop and apply equations of state and activity models for fluid-rock interaction in hydrothermal systems and the mobility of critical elements. The work includes compiling, evaluating, and interpreting experimental thermodynamic data; using physical, statistical, and machine-learning methods to estimate missing model parameters; and contributing to internally consistent thermodynamic databases such as the Mines thermodynamic database.
The researcher will also contribute to the GEMS/ThermoEcos open-source ecosystem, including ThermoFun, ThermoExp, GEMS, and GEMSFITS. Collaboration with PSI researchers and New Mexico Tech in the USA is expected, along with publications and presentations at international conferences.
Candidates should hold a PhD in geochemistry, physical chemistry, chemical engineering, computational science, or a related discipline, with expertise in chemical thermodynamics. Scientific programming experience in Python and/or C++, nonlinear least-squares fitting, parameter optimization, and uncertainty estimation are required. Experience with GEMS, PHREEQC, SUPCRT/SUPCRTBL, Reaktoro, the HKF model, density-based equations of state, or thermodynamic database development is advantageous.
The appointment is a two-year fixed-term employment contract. Apply online by 1 December 2026, including a publication list, code and model development details, and referee addresses. For further information, contact Dr George-Dan Miron at [email protected].

What's required
Applicants must hold a PhD in geochemistry, physical chemistry, chemical engineering, computational science, or a related field, with a background in chemical thermodynamics. Experience with scientific programming in Python and/or C++, or demonstrated ability to develop scientific software including AI programming support, is required. Experience with non-linear least-squares fitting, parameter optimization, and uncertainty estimation is required. Experience with geochemical modelling codes such as GEMS, PHREEQC, SUPCRT/SUPCRTBL, or Reaktoro; the HKF model or density-based equations of state; and thermodynamic database development is advantageous. The application should include a publication list, code and model development information, and addresses of referees.
