The Ma Lab at Vrije Universiteit Brussel is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher for a FWO-funded position in evolutionary genomics, focusing on the evolution of sex chromosomes and sex-specific recombination in anurans (frogs). The lab investigates how sex chromosomes and sex-determination systems originate and evolve, with particular interest in the genomic basis of sex determination, recombination suppression, and the role of endosymbionts in host reproduction. The Ma Lab is part of the Biology Department at Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium.
Applicants should have a PhD in evolutionary biology, genomics, bioinformatics, or a closely related field, with strong expertise in evolutionary/population genomics and molecular evolution. Required skills include high-throughput sequencing data analysis, genome assembly, comparative genomics, and strong programming/data-analysis skills (Python, R, Unix). Motivation to work on frog genomes and link genomic patterns to evolutionary mechanisms is essential. A valid EU or equivalent driving licence and prior fieldwork experience are preferred. The position is initially for 12 months, renewable up to 3 years upon positive evaluation, with a planned start date of 1 June 2026 (flexible).
