About this position
Uppsala University is recruiting a full-time postdoctoral researcher in fast-neutron dosimetry and reference neutron fields at the Department of Physics and Astronomy, Division of Applied Nuclear Physics, in Uppsala, Sweden.
The postdoc will work within the NESSA team on a Swedish Radiation Safety Authority-funded project establishing and characterising a variable-energy reference neutron field. Research will use the 14 MeV NESSA neutron facility and charged-particle-induced neutron fields at the Uppsala Tandem Laboratory, with links to the European metrology chain.
Duties include developing and validating Monte Carlo models using MCNP, FLUKA, Geant4, PHITS, and FISPACT-II; commissioning neutron detectors such as liquid scintillators, micro fission chambers, and activation foils; measuring neutron spectra and fluence with uncertainty budgets; conducting shielding and moderation experiments; measuring detector response functions; supporting cross-calibration campaigns; publishing in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at conferences; and contributing to education and training.
Applicants need a PhD in physics or a related field, experimental nuclear or radiation physics experience, Monte Carlo radiation-transport experience, strong English communication skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively. Experience with fast neutrons, neutron spectrometry, dosimetry, HPGe gamma-ray spectrometry, metrology, uncertainty analysis, or accelerator experiments is advantageous.
The appointment is a two-year temporary position, starting 1 February 2027 or by agreement. Applications are due 7 December 2026.

What's required
Applicants must hold a PhD in physics or a related field, or an equivalent foreign degree, by the employment decision. Priority is given to applicants whose PhD was completed no more than three years before the application deadline, subject to permitted extensions for special circumstances. Documented experience in experimental nuclear or radiation physics, such as neutron measurements, radiation detectors, or dosimetry, and experience with Monte Carlo simulation of radiation transport are required. Very good spoken and written English, structured and thorough independent work, project-driving ability, and effective collaboration are required. Additional desirable qualifications include fast-neutron techniques; liquid scintillators and pulse-shape discrimination; fission chambers; digital data acquisition; neutron spectrometry and dosimetry; neutron activation and HPGe gamma-ray spectrometry; MCNP, FLUKA, Geant4, PHITS, or FISPACT-II; uncertainty analysis and metrology; and accelerator or neutron-source experiments. Applicants must also pass security vetting if such vetting is conducted.
