About this position
This postdoctoral project at Uppsala University focuses on the impacts of extreme weather events and the attribution of those impacts to physical climate events. The successful candidate will contribute to the EU project CLOSER and to the Swedish Centre for Impacts of Climate Extremes (climes), working on the compilation of data and analysis of how extreme climate events affect society.
The research sits in the Department of Earth Sciences, within the Programme for Air, Water, and Landscape Science. This environment brings together meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis, and physical geography, and is part of a large geoscience department with broad expertise across natural sciences and technology. The department emphasizes interdisciplinary work, with research spanning weather and climate, natural hazards, environmental and water engineering, sustainable development, and related fields.
The project is centered on linking physical extreme events with exposure and impacts. The postdoc will work with data collection and analysis of socioeconomic effects of extreme climate events in the mid-latitudes, using a range of data sources such as reanalyses, remote sensing, climate models, impact databases, and textual data. Relevant event types include heatwaves, cold spells, wildfires, storms, and droughts. The work is designed to combine climate science with quantitative analysis and data-driven approaches in an international research setting.
The position is based in Uppsala, with expected travel within Sweden and internationally. The advert highlights a collaborative, international environment and a department with more than 300 staff from over 30 countries.

What's required
A PhD degree in climate science, meteorology, natural hazards, physics, applied mathematics, statistics, data science or a related discipline, or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD in one of these subjects, is required and the degree must be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Applicants who obtained the PhD three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered, although the period may be extended for special circumstances. Previous experience in at least one of the following is required: impacts of extreme weather, remote sensing data for extreme climate events, computational linguistics, or machine learning in disaster management. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to communicate research through peer-reviewed articles in leading international journals, have excellent written and spoken English, and show strong collaborative skills. Experience across two or more of the listed areas, a strong publication record, initiative, independent working, project-driving ability, and an interest in developing and testing new ideas are considered meritorious.
