About this position

University of Gothenburg is advertising a postdoctoral position in structural studies of mitochondrial DNA replication in Gothenburg, Sweden. The project sits within an interdisciplinary research team combining molecular biology, biochemistry, structural biology, and cell biology to study how human mitochondrial DNA replication is organized and regulated, and how defects in these processes contribute to human disease.

The research focus is on the molecular mechanisms controlling mtDNA replication and gene expression, with special emphasis on the structure and function of protein and protein-DNA complexes involved in the replication machinery. A major technical component of the project is single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), including sample preparation, grid optimization, data processing, and structural analysis. The postdoctoral researcher will also perform biochemical characterization of protein complexes and use in vitro assays to test mechanistic models and the effects of disease-associated mutations.

This is a research-intensive postdoctoral role for someone who can work independently while collaborating closely with group members and external collaborators. The post is funded by a Wallenberg Scholar grant, and the listed salary is 39,700 SEK.

Ideal applicants will have a background aligned with biology, medical science, structural biology, and related quantitative/biophysical methods. Experience with cryo-EM, biochemical analysis of macromolecular complexes, and studies of protein-DNA interactions would be highly relevant.

Institution: University of Gothenburg
Location: Gothenburg, Sweden
Deadline: 15 November 2026
Application: Apply via the university website / Nature Careers external application portal.
