About this position
Postdoctoral Research Associate in Biopolymer-Derived Ionic Materials and Interfaces at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Oak Ridge, Tennessee, United States.
This postdoctoral opening is in the Macromolecular Nanomaterials group within the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS), Physical Sciences Directorate, and is tied to the Harnessing Complex Macromolecular Conformations (HCMC) theme. The project focuses on the synthesis and fundamental understanding of biopolymer-derived ionic materials and interfaces, with emphasis on renewable materials from bioderived macromolecules and hierarchical biological building blocks.
Research topics include polymer science, materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, and related soft-matter areas. The successful candidate will study relationships among molecular structure, interfacial interactions, processing, morphology, dynamics, transport, and macroscopic performance. Materials of interest include hydrogels, membranes, films, coatings, composites, porous materials, and functional interfaces.
Neutron scattering and imaging are central to the work, including small-angle neutron scattering, neutron reflectometry, quasi-elastic neutron scattering, neutron spectroscopy, and neutron imaging. The role also involves selective deuteration, contrast variation, complementary characterization, and quantitative structure-property-processing relationships. Applications may connect to separations, catalysis, sustainable composites, coatings, membranes, hydrogels, and other energy- and environment-related uses.
Eligibility: PhD completed within the last 5 years in Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemistry, Bioengineering, or a closely related field. Applicants should have experience in synthesis, modification, processing, or characterization of polymers/biopolymers/soft materials, plus laboratory experimentation and quantitative data analysis. Preferred experience includes polysaccharides, proteins, lignin, transport in soft materials, interfacial phenomena, diffusion, sorption, phase behavior, modeling, and scientific programming.
Funding: The appointment is up to 24 months with possible extension, subject to performance and funding availability. ORNL states competitive pay and benefits, but no stipend amount is listed.
Application: Apply via the ORNL jobs portal. Submit your application materials and three letters of reference. References may be uploaded or emailed to [email protected] with the position title and number in the subject line. The posting remains open for a minimum of 5 days and closes when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired.
