About this position
The University of New Hampshire invites applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate in Fusarium genomics, detection, and host-range studies. The position is based at the USDA Agricultural Research Service Cereal Crops Research Unit in Madison, Wisconsin, with approximately three short annual visits to UNH in Durham, New Hampshire.
The multidisciplinary project investigates a newly recognized Fusarium-associated disease of cold-hardy grapevines in the northern United States. Research areas include fungal genomics, plant pathology, molecular diagnostics, comparative genomics, plant–microbe interactions, host-range experiments, fungicide sensitivity, and grower-oriented disease management.
The successful researcher will assemble, annotate, and compare Fusarium genomes; conduct host-range experiments involving grapevine, barley, wheat, maize, oats, and ryegrass; study relationships between Fusarium populations from grapevines and cereal crops; contribute to regional grower surveys; and develop or evaluate PCR- and high-resolution melting-based diagnostic tools. Responsibilities also include preparing manuscripts, reports, presentations, and extension materials, presenting findings, mentoring students, and collaborating with project partners.
A Ph.D. in Plant Pathology, Microbiology, Mycology, Biology, Genomics, or a related field is required by the January 4, 2027 start date. Candidates completing their Ph.D. by December 2026 may apply. U.S. citizenship and successful completion of federal facility background and Tier 2 access requirements are required. Experience with Fusarium biology, phylogenetics, population genomics, genome assembly, pangenomes, bioinformatics, Linux, high-performance computing, Python, R, diagnostics, HRM analysis, or molecular assay development is preferred.
The one-year appointment may be renewed for a second year. Salary is $60,000–$65,000 annually, with eligible medical, dental, vision, insurance, retirement, and paid-time-off benefits. Apply online with a cover letter, CV, brief research statement, three professional references, and transcripts. Review begins two weeks after posting and continues until the position is filled.

What's required
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology, Microbiology, Mycology, Biology, Genomics, or a closely related field by January 4, 2027; candidates expecting to complete their Ph.D. by December 2026 are encouraged to apply. Demonstrated research experience is required in one or more of fungal genomics, molecular diagnostics, fungal pathogens, plant–microbe interactions, or comparative genomics. Applicants must be able to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment and participate in laboratory, greenhouse, field, and grower-oriented research. Eligibility is limited to U.S. citizens. Appointment requires satisfactory completion of required background investigation and/or fingerprint checks and the ability to meet Tier 2 background investigation requirements for work at a federal research facility. Preferred experience includes Fusarium or related fungal pathogen biology, taxonomy, phylogenetics, population genomics, genome sequencing, assembly and annotation, pangenome or comparative genomics, genome-wide association studies, bioinformatics using Linux, high-performance computing, Python or R, plant disease diagnostics, HRM analysis, molecular assay development, and disease research involving grapes or cereal crops.
How to apply
