About this position
Louisiana State University is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join the Louisiana State University Museum of Natural Science (LSUMNS) and collaborate with Dr. Gregory Thom and members of the Department of Biological Sciences. The position is part of an NSF-funded project, A genomic-architecture-aware approach for resolving a taxonomically complete phylogeny of parrots.
The researcher will lead computational genomic analyses to infer a phylogeny encompassing more than 700 parrot taxa using whole-genome data. The work will involve processing and evaluating genomic datasets, genome assembly, whole-genome alignment, genome annotation, comparative genomics, and phylogenetic inference. The project will also examine genomic features that influence phylogenetic signal and support large-scale analyses of genome evolution and population genomics.
Alongside the primary research, the postdoctoral researcher will prepare and publish manuscripts, collaborate with investigators inside and outside LSU, and help generate preliminary data for future federal grant proposals. The role includes mentoring graduate and undergraduate researchers, participating in seminars and departmental activities, hosting visiting researchers, and contributing to LSUMNS outreach.
The position also includes curatorial and field responsibilities within the LSUMNS Collection of Genetic Resources. Activities may involve database management, improving collection and specimen-vouchering methods, collecting and preparing biological material, and assisting with field expeditions. This offers an interdisciplinary research environment connecting evolutionary biology, ornithology, genomics, bioinformatics, museum collections, and field research.

What's required
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Biology, Genetics, Evolutionary Biology, Ecology, Zoology, or a closely related discipline. Required experience includes extensive use of programming languages and modern bioinformatic and phylogenomic tools, a good background in producing peer-reviewed publications, and experience with genome evolution, ornithology, and genomics wet-lab methods. Preferred qualifications include a career-stage-appropriate publication record in Evolutionary Biology and Ornithology and demonstrated experience analyzing population genomic data to investigate neutral and/or adaptive processes. Field experience is preferred but not required. Applicants must provide a CV, cover letter, and contact information for three references; valid U.S. work authorization is required at the time of hire and throughout employment, and employment is contingent on a satisfactory background check.
