About this position
Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate for the Quantum Heterostructures Group within the Materials Science and Technology Division and Physical Sciences Directorate. The project focuses on the synthesis of quantum materials and the investigation of their novel electronic, magnetic, and structural properties.
The researcher will synthesize epitaxial thin films using molecular beam epitaxy and work with advanced characterization methods. Depending on experience and project needs, techniques may include physical-property and cryogenic transport measurements, magnetometry, laboratory or synchrotron X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, X-ray and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and neutron reflectometry.
The role offers a highly collaborative research environment at a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory. The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to scientific publications and conference presentations, lead user proposals for access to DOE-funded facilities, and collaborate across ORNL’s materials and quantum-science communities. Work may also involve numerical data analysis, laboratory control software, and emerging AI/ML approaches for science.

What's required
Applicants must hold a PhD in Condensed Matter Physics, Materials Science, or a closely related science discipline, completed within the last five years, and must complete all degree requirements before starting the appointment. Applicants should have experience in epitaxial thin-film synthesis, ultrahigh-vacuum techniques such as scanning tunneling microscopy and photoemission, or cryogenic transport and magnetometry measurements. Preferred qualifications include a strong publication and conference record, numerical data analysis and control-software customization using Python or LabVIEW, knowledge of AI/ML methods for science, familiarity with PPMS, XRD, dilution refrigerators, SQUID, XPS, scanning probes, soft X-rays, and neutrons, excellent communication skills, independence, collaboration, prioritization, and adaptability. The position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge or, for eligible foreign-national candidates, a favorable LSSO risk determination; three letters of recommendation are required.
