About this position
University of Exeter is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate or Postdoctoral Research Fellow for the NERC-funded project Next-generation modelling of future hazards in dynamic foreland rivers.
The full-time, fixed-term role is based in Exeter, United Kingdom, and runs from 1 April 2027 to 30 September 2028. The project will develop and apply new approaches to predict and understand hydro-geomorphic hazards during floods and their societal impacts on floodplain populations downstream of the Himalayan mountain front in India.
The successful researcher will join a UK and international team and support socioeconomic surveys, household and community vulnerability research, decision-making studies, fieldwork and stakeholder engagement in India. They will also analyse large spatiotemporal and environmental datasets to quantify population exposure under future environmental and management scenarios. Relevant research areas include environmental science, geography, earth science, hydro-geomorphology, flood risk, GIS and demographic social science.
Applicants should have a relevant PhD, be nearing completion of a PhD, or have equivalent related qualifications and experience, depending on the appointment level. Strong mixed-methods expertise is required, particularly focus-group facilitation, participatory survey design and quantitative demographic research. Experience with GIS, spatial vulnerability or exposure mapping, stakeholder engagement, hazard-affected communities, logistic regression, generalized linear models, Bayesian belief networks or agent-based models is advantageous. Familiarity with intersectional approaches, population displacement and the South Asian context is also valuable.
The starting salary is from £35,302 for the Postdoctoral Research Associate level and from £44,352 for the Postdoctoral Research Fellow level. The application deadline is 18 November 2026 at 23:59. Applicants should consult the full Job Description and Person Specification and apply through the University of Exeter Careers portal.
