About this position

The University of Vienna is recruiting an experienced researcher for a postdoctoral-level research position in cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) at the Querques Lab, Max Perutz Labs, Vienna, Austria.

The lab investigates how mobile genetic elements move between and within genomes, their roles in genome remodeling, and how these mechanisms can support the development of genome-engineering tools. The research combines structural biology with biochemical, biophysical, and biotechnological methods, including cell-based assays, protein design, and genome editing.

The successful candidate will contribute to structural characterization projects across the lab and develop or implement cryo-EM workflows in collaboration with available cryo-EM facilities. Depending on experience, the role may include contributing specialist expertise to collaborative projects or developing and leading an independent research project. Relevant research interests include cryo-EM, molecular biology, structural biology, protein biochemistry, nucleic acid–protein complexes, and RNA biology.

Applicants need substantial practical experience in cryo-EM sample preparation, grid optimization, grid screening, data collection, image processing, and structure determination. A PhD involving cryo-EM, cryo-EM publications, or equivalent experience from academia, a cryo-EM facility, or industry is suitable. The position is open to candidates with different training levels and career stages, with hands-on expertise prioritized over a specific qualification.

This is a full-time, fixed-term 24-month position with a basic salary of EUR 5,014.30 paid 14 times annually, subject to increase for credited professional experience. The University offers flexible working arrangements, professional development, coaching, and an international research environment at the Vienna BioCenter.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and remain open until a suitable candidate is found, with a stated application deadline of 7 November 2026. Apply through the University of Vienna job portal or email the required documents to Irma Querques.

What's required

Candidates must have substantial hands-on experience in cryo-EM, including sample preparation and grid optimization, grid screening and data collection, and image processing and structure determination. A demonstrated track record in cryo-EM is required; this may include a PhD involving cryo-EM research, significant contributions to cryo-EM publications, or extensive practical experience in an academic research group, cryo-EM facility, or industry. Additional experience in protein biochemistry, structural biology, nucleic acid-protein complexes, or RNA biology is valuable. Applicants should be able to work independently, proactively, collaboratively, and show eagerness to learn. Applications must include a motivation letter, CV detailing research and technical experience, publication list identifying cryo-EM contributions, and contact details for at least two references.

How to apply

Apply via the University of Vienna job portal or email your application to [email protected] with the subject “Querques Lab: Cryo-EM.” Include a motivation letter, detailed CV, publication list highlighting cryo-EM work, and contact details for at least two references.
