About this position

The Matos laboratory at the Max Perutz Labs, University of Vienna, is seeking a Senior Scientist for mechanistic research into DNA repair, homologous recombination, meiotic crossover formation and chromosome biology.

The successful researcher will take a leading role in projects investigating how recombination intermediates are formed and processed, how meiotic crossovers are generated, and how chromosome architecture and recombination are coordinated during gametogenesis. The laboratory works with budding yeast and mammalian systems and combines genetics, molecular and cell biology, biochemistry, genomics, structural biology and advanced imaging.

A major focus will be the purification and functional characterization of recombinant proteins and multi-protein complexes, development of quantitative biochemical assays, in-vitro reconstitution of molecular reactions, and analysis of protein–protein and protein–DNA interactions. Structural approaches such as cryo-electron microscopy, X-ray crystallography or related methods may be integrated with biochemical studies to define the organization and regulation of DNA repair and recombination machineries.

The role offers substantial scientific independence within the Matos laboratory’s research programme. The Senior Scientist will help develop new research directions, contribute to publications and collaborative projects, and connect biochemical and structural approaches with genetics, microscopy, proteomics and genome-wide methods available across the Vienna BioCenter.

In addition to conducting research, the researcher will support the development of laboratory members through mentoring, supervision and teaching in molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics and chromosome biology. The position also involves contributing to specialized workflows, protocols, equipment coordination and a rigorous, collaborative international research environment.

Applicants must hold a PhD in biochemistry, molecular biology, structural biology, genetics, cell biology or a related field. Required or strongly expected experience includes DNA repair, homologous recombination, chromosome biology or related molecular biology; protein expression and purification; protein biochemistry; biochemical reconstitution; quantitative biochemical assays; multi-protein complexes; independent research design, troubleshooting and interpretation; and a strong publication record. Structural biology experience, including cryo-electron microscopy, X-ray crystallography or related methods, is highly desirable. Experience in meiotic recombination is beneficial but not essential. Applicants should have mentoring or teaching experience, scientific independence, rigor, adaptability, strong communication and interpersonal skills, excellent spoken and written English, and willingness to learn and establish new methodologies. German, science communication and public outreach experience are beneficial.
