About this position

The Astrocent Department of the Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences is offering three postdoctoral positions in the field of infrasound and seismic instrumentation for gravitational wave detectors. These positions are part of the Particle Astrophysics Technology Centre (Astrocent), supported by the Foundation for Polish Science International Research Agendas Programme and financed from the European Funds for a Modern Economy programme. The research focus is on developing, characterizing, and deploying next-generation infrasound and seismic sensors to mitigate environmental noise affecting gravitational wave detection below 30 Hz, including seismic and Newtonian gravity noises and acoustic disturbances in the infrasound band.

Successful candidates will join a vibrant research group led by Dr. Mariusz Suchenek, actively participating in the Virgo and Einstein Telescope collaborations. The group also works with industrial partners to explore commercial applications of the developed technologies. Astrocent is a rapidly expanding research centre with a combined 30 million EUR of funding from Horizon Europe Teaming of Excellence, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, and the Foundation for Polish Science. The centre is internationally recognized for its research in neutrino, gravitational wave, and dark matter detection using advanced instruments, and maintains close collaborations with institutions such as APC in Paris and the McDonald Institute in Canada.

Astrocent comprises three international research groups: photonics for astroparticle physics and sustainable energy, medical physics and radiation detectors, and electronics, seismic, and environmental sensors. The centre is currently transitioning into a new independent institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The research environment is open, stimulating, and friendly, with access to all necessary facilities and financial support for travel and scientific visits.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Physics, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Applied Physics, Geophysics, or a closely related field. Essential skills include expertise in analog and digital electronics, embedded systems development, Python programming for data analysis, signal processing, and excellent English communication. Desired qualifications include FPGA programming, PCB design, and knowledge of control systems for active noise cancellation. The initial contract is for two years, with the possibility of renewal, and offers a gross monthly salary of 9361 PLN (estimated net 7925 PLN).

To apply, candidates should submit a CV, statement of research interests, publication list, relevant project portfolio, PhD diploma, PhD thesis, and at least two reference letters sent directly by referees to [email protected]. A signed GDPD form is also required. Interviews for shortlisted candidates are scheduled for 21-22 April 2026, and the contract starts on 1 May 2026 at the earliest. Astrocent values diversity and is committed to equal opportunities.
