About this position

University Medical Center Utrecht (UMC Utrecht) is offering a postdoctoral position in ALS protein biology and pathway discovery. The project focuses on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a devastating neurodegenerative disease marked by progressive motor neuron loss, and aims to connect human genetics and transcriptomics with protein-level mechanisms in disease-relevant tissues and models.

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will investigate how ALS-associated genes and pathways manifest at the protein level. The work combines two complementary directions: protein-level characterization of human postmortem ALS spinal cord and brain tissue, and molecular/cellular studies in neuronal models. In tissue, you will study cellular and subcellular localization of disease-associated proteins, characterize pathological cell states, and identify pathway alterations that may reveal biomarker opportunities or new mechanistic insights.

A major technical focus is the development of high-dimensional multiplexed protein imaging using the MACSima platform. You will work closely with a research technician to design antibody panels and optimize staining workflows for quantitative analysis across cell types and pathological states. In parallel, you will study newly discovered ALS-associated genes in CRISPR-engineered iPSC lines and iPSC-derived motor neurons, using immunocytochemistry, fluorescence microscopy, protein analysis, and related molecular and biochemical methods.

The project has a special interest in microtubule organization and function in post-mitotic neurons, with opportunities to explore downstream functional consequences. The position also includes active mentoring and collaboration: you will support PhD and MSc students, help plan experiments, troubleshoot technical challenges, and contribute to shared scientific goals. The team offers a multidisciplinary environment with the opportunity to take a leading scientific role in publications.

Institution: UMC Utrecht, Netherlands. Position type: Postdoctoral researcher. Application deadline: 2026-11-19. Applications are submitted via the AcademicTransfer link provided in the posting.

What's required

A completed PhD or equivalent research doctorate is implied by the postdoctoral role. The description emphasizes strong experimental research skills in molecular/cellular neuroscience, protein analysis, immunocytochemistry, fluorescence microscopy, and working with human tissue or iPSC-derived neuronal models. Experience with multiplexed imaging, CRISPR-engineered cell lines, or neurodegeneration research would be advantageous. The role also requires strong collaborative skills, the ability to support and mentor PhD and MSc students, and the capacity to work in a multidisciplinary team and contribute to publications.
