About this position
RECOVER – the Romanian Centre of Excellence for Biodiversity, Ecosystem Services and Society is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to join the University of Bucharest team in a national consortium coordinated by Babeș-Bolyai University. The project brings together ecology, geography, and the social sciences and humanities to study biodiversity change, ecosystem services, and nature’s contributions to people, and to co-design conservation and restoration solutions with stakeholders.
The selected researcher will contribute to work on biodiversity conservation and restoration in traditional farming systems of high biocultural value, mitigation of the impacts of productive management on biodiversity, and the drivers of spatio-temporal variability in ecological communities. The core research problem is how traditional management practices such as grazing, manual mowing, and mechanised mowing shape biodiversity in agricultural and pastoral landscapes.
The role combines field ecology, community surveys, landscape-level observation, and quantitative analysis. The researcher will help design the study, select sites, develop sampling protocols, and collect field data on biological communities, microhabitats, microrefugia, and management regimes. A second strand of the work involves documenting traditional practices and local ecological knowledge through interviews or questionnaires with farmers and livestock breeders. The post also includes data management, statistical analysis in R, and indicator species analysis.
The successful candidate will contribute as first author to publishable research outputs on the ecological effects of traditional grazing and mowing and on the relationship between traditional practices, local knowledge, and biodiversity conservation. The position is embedded in an interdisciplinary centre of excellence with partner teams across Romania, with opportunities to present results, take part in project reporting, dissemination, and capacity-building activities.
The post is based at the University of Bucharest, within the RECOVER consortium, and the work is linked to biodiversity and landscape heterogeneity in rural social-ecological systems.
