About this position

Postdoctoral Researcher in Eco-Evolutionary Microbiome and Thermal Biology at Lund University, Sweden.

This postdoctoral position is part of the project “From Guts to Growth: Unravelling the Gut Microbiome’s Role in Ontogenetic Trajectories toward Climate Stress Resilience” (HOTGUT). The project examines how environmental stress, gut microbiome dynamics, and host physiology interact during early development to shape growth, metabolism, thermoregulation, and resilience to climate-induced thermal stress.

The research uses wild great tits (Parus major) breeding in nest-box populations and combines controlled field experiments, laboratory microbiology, physiological measurements, and bioinformatic analyses. The successful candidate will take a leading operational role in planning, coordinating, and conducting the project’s research activities, including experiments on early-life thermal and hormonal stress and microbiome function transmission.

Key duties include fieldwork with wild nest-box breeding passerines, collection and processing of faecal, oral, cloacal, blood, and environmental samples, microbiome laboratory work (DNA extraction, library preparation, quality control, and preparation for 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing), reproducible bioinformatic and statistical workflows, and data analysis, publications, conference presentations, and open-science practices.

Required background: a PhD in evolutionary ecology, ecological physiology, microbiology, bioinformatics, ornithology, or a related field; strong bioinformatic skills; experience with reproducible amplicon-sequencing analysis; advanced quantitative/statistical skills in R; very good English; and a valid driving licence. Experience with wild birds, thermal physiology, endocrine or molecular analyses, and related field/lab methods is considered a merit.

The position is a fixed-term, full-time postdoctoral appointment for 2 years, starting on 2027-03-01 or as soon as possible thereafter. The work location is the Department of Biology, Lund University, Lund, Sweden. Application deadline: 2026-10-30.

To apply, submit a single PDF in English containing a cover letter, CV with publication list and relevant experience, a brief research description on how you would contribute to HOTGUT, contact details for at least two academic references, and a copy of your doctoral degree certificate and any other supporting documents.

Funding details

Fixed-term postdoctoral researcher position at 100% full time for 2 years. Salary is monthly; no stipend or tuition information is given.

What's required

Applicants must have a PhD, or an equivalent international degree, in evolutionary ecology, ecological physiology, microbiology, bioinformatics, ornithology, or another relevant field, completed no more than three years before the employment decision unless special circumstances apply. Required qualifications include strong bioinformatic skills, experience with reproducible amplicon-sequencing analysis, strong quantitative skills with advanced statistical analysis in R and mixed-effects and multivariate models, very good oral and written English, and a valid driving licence for fieldwork. Merits include experience with wild birds, especially hole-nesting passerines, bird handling, ringing, nest monitoring, blood sampling, thermal-physiology methods, and endocrine, oxidative-stress, metabolomic, or other molecular/physiological analyses.

How to apply

Prepare a single PDF in English with a cover letter, CV with publication list and relevant experience, a brief research description on how you would contribute to HOTGUT, contact details for at least two academic references, and a copy of your doctoral degree certificate and any other supporting certificates. Submit via the Lund University/Varbi application portal before the deadline.
