About this position
The University of Chicago is seeking a postdoctoral researcher in experimental cosmology to work with Prof. Jessica Zebrowski in the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics. The Zebrowski group develops new instruments and observational techniques for studying the early universe, large-scale structure, and galaxy formation across cosmic time.
The position offers the chance to contribute to research spanning several connected areas in modern cosmology and instrumentation, including:
- Far-infrared line-intensity mapping, with analysis of first science data from the Terahertz Intensity Mapper (TIM), a balloon-borne experiment mapping star formation and large-scale structure through high-redshift [CII] emission.
- Spectrometer and detector development, including novel millimeter-wave and submillimeter-wave instrumentation, on-chip spectrometers, superconducting detectors, and optical characterization.
- 21-cm cosmology and the Dark Ages, with low-frequency radio instrumentation and observational strategies for measuring the cosmological 21-cm signal.
- High-redshift cosmology with Little Red Dots, using these objects as tracers of large-scale structure and as probes for precision cosmology, galaxy evolution, and cross-correlations with other tracers.
Research opportunities are broad and may involve instrumentation, detector development, observations, simulations, and data analysis. The successful candidate will be able to help shape their project direction based on expertise and interests while collaborating with the wider cosmology community at UChicago and KICP.
The role is embedded in an active research environment focused on experimental cosmology and astronomical instrumentation, with opportunities to lead projects connected to current and future observational efforts.
