About this position

Tampere University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position in Experimental Quantum Optics, joining the internationally recognized Experimental Quantum Optics group. The group is engaged in cutting-edge research at the intersection of quantum optics, atom physics, and structured matter waves, supported by the ERC Starting Grant project TWISTION. The research focuses on pioneering charged matter wave experiments, particularly with electrons and ions, and aims to explore complex structured matter waves, develop novel mechanisms for their generation and measurement, and investigate the underlying physics.

The successful candidate will work in a vibrant, diverse, and collaborative research environment, benefiting from Tampere University's strong infrastructure and active research hub. The group is part of a world-leading institution with activities spanning nanofabrication, nonlinear and theoretical optics, metamaterials, and laser development, and is involved in the Photonics Flagship initiative PREIN of the Academy of Finland. Collaborations extend across a large network of international experts.

The position is well-funded through the ERC grant, offering a typical starting salary of 3800-3900 EUR/month, with a contract of up to two years and the possibility of extension. Staff benefits include occupational health care, flexible working hours, excellent sports facilities, and campus discounts. A six-month trial period applies to new employees.

Applicants must hold an internationally recognized PhD in quantum physics research, ideally with expertise in atom physics and matter waves. If the degree is pending, it must be completed before employment starts. Strong English communication skills are essential, and programming experience (Matlab, Python, or similar) is highly valued. Experience in quantum foundations, matter waves, and atom physics is advantageous. The role also offers opportunities to contribute to ongoing quantum optics experiments, supervise students, and participate in teaching.

To apply, submit your application via the Tampere University online recruitment system before the deadline of February 1, 2026. Applications should be in English and include a CV (TENK guidelines), publication list (Academy of Finland guidelines), references from two people, and a motivation letter outlining your background, research experience, and future plans. For further information, contact Professor Robert Fickler at [email protected].

This is an excellent opportunity for motivated researchers to join a dynamic team and contribute to fundamental advances in quantum optics and atom physics at a leading European university.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
