About this position
The Centre for Demographic Studies in Barcelona is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher for the research line on gender and fertility. The researcher will join the project “Beyond Low Fertility: Is the Intention to Remain Childfree Increasing in Europe?”, funded by Fundación BBVA.
The project investigates whether the intention to remain childless is increasing across Europe, rather than reflecting only postponed parenthood. It treats fertility intentions as adaptive plans that individuals revise as they encounter changing constraints and opportunities throughout the life course. The research will examine when women and men shift from postponing parenthood to intending to remain childfree, whether these intentions remain stable, and which factors are associated with childlessness intentions over time.
The postdoctoral researcher will conduct independent and collaborative research on fertility intentions, reproductive trajectories, childlessness and family formation from a life-course perspective. Work will address the formation, revision and realization of fertility intentions, including the roles of employment, partnership trajectories, family background and socioeconomic conditions.
The role involves analysing longitudinal and cross-national survey data and applying quantitative approaches such as sequence analysis, longitudinal and panel-data methods, fixed-effects models and event-history analysis. The researcher will also work with harmonized comparative demographic datasets, contributing to data construction, harmonization, documentation and quality assessment.
Additional activities include literature reviews, data preparation, statistical analysis, manuscript development, responses to reviewers, conference and workshop presentations, grant development and contributions to collaborative publications. The researcher will maintain transparent and reproducible workflows through version control, code documentation and reproducible statistical analyses, while participating in seminars, reading groups, workshops and other academic activities at the Centre for Demographic Studies.
The position offers an interdisciplinary environment focused on population research, fertility and family demography, with opportunities to contribute to international peer-reviewed research and comparative demographic projects.
