About this position
The University of Gothenburg is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to investigate how gut microbiota-derived metabolites contribute to cardiometabolic disease. The project is based in the Department of Molecular and Clinical Medicine at the Institute of Medicine and focuses on the metabolite imidazole propionate (ImP), which has been associated with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
The researcher will study causal relationships between ImP and cardiometabolic phenotypes, including glucose intolerance, insulin resistance and atherosclerosis. The work combines conventional, gnotobiotic and colonized mouse models with detailed metabolic phenotyping. Key experimental activities include glucose and insulin tolerance testing, hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp studies, arterial blood sampling, microsurgical catheterization, tissue-specific glucose-uptake experiments, and analysis of atherosclerotic plaques.
A major component of the project involves germ-free mice colonized with gut bacteria to examine endogenous ImP production under controlled microbial conditions. The researcher will work with isolators and Isocage systems, transgenic mouse strains and molecular mechanisms such as p38 signaling. Additional work may include bariatric surgery, histology, immunohistochemistry, primary-cell experiments and metabolic analyses.
The postdoctoral researcher will join an interdisciplinary translational research environment spanning microbiome biology, metabolism, diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease. The research group studies how complex microbial ecosystems and bioactive metabolites influence host physiology and disease development.

What's required
Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in a relevant subject, or an equivalent foreign degree, before the employment decision. Normally, the degree should have been completed no more than three years before the end of the application period, although exceptions may apply for specified special grounds. Required experience includes advanced experimental work with mouse models; metabolic phenotyping, blood sampling, glucose and insulin tolerance tests, MRI body-composition analysis, hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamps with jugular-vein and carotid-artery catheterization, advanced mouse dissection, atherosclerosis analysis, organ perfusion and dissection, skeletal-muscle glucose-uptake experiments, radioactive-isotope analysis, and independent work with gnotobiotic and germ-free mice in isolators. Experience with anaerobic cultivation, isolation and characterization of human gut bacteria, and bioinformatic or genome-based analysis must be described in the cover letter. Experience with transgenic mouse models, genotyping, breeding, validation, additional microsurgery, histology, immunohistochemistry, primary-cell isolation, and Seahorse metabolic assays is advantageous. Strong collaboration, initiative, independence, flexibility, analytical ability and problem-solving skills are also required.
How to apply
Prepare a complete application including the PhD certificate, or provide it no later than the employment decision if it has not yet been issued. Include a cover letter describing relevant anaerobic cultivation, gut-bacteria, and bioinformatic/genome-analysis experience. Submit the application through the University of Gothenburg recruitment portal using the Apply button before 24 November 2026.
