About this position

The University of Vienna is seeking a full-time postdoctoral researcher in the Centre for Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science, within the Division of Microbiology and Ecosystem Science.

The project investigates metabolic features shaping interactions between Patescibacteria and polyphosphate-accumulating organisms in wastewater treatment plants. The research will examine microbial ecology, microbial interactions, phosphorus removal, and implications for engineered wastewater treatment systems.

The postdoctoral researcher will conduct bioinformatic analyses, including population and co-occurrence analyses, comparative genomics, large-scale genome and metagenome interpretation, and metabolic reconstruction. Laboratory work will complement computational analyses through fluorescence in situ hybridization, PCR-based molecular techniques, and activity-based assays.

Applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant field and should have experience with bioinformatics, microbial interaction studies, molecular methods, Patescibacteria, and wastewater treatment processes. Applications require a motivation letter, CV with publication list, university certificates including grades, and contact information for two references.

The position is based in Vienna, Austria, starts on 1 January 2027, and offers a gross salary of EUR 5,014.30 per month on a 14-pay basis for full-time employment. The application deadline is 11 November 2026.

What's required

Applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant field. Relevant experience includes population and co-occurrence analyses, comparative genomic analyses for metabolic reconstruction, use of bioinformatic tools, and laboratory methods for studying microbial interactions. Candidates should have in-depth knowledge of Patescibacteria and microbial processes in wastewater treatment, including phosphorus removal and polyphosphate-accumulating organisms, as well as experience with fluorescence in situ hybridization, PCR-based methods, and related molecular techniques. The application should include a 1–2 page motivation letter addressing the qualifications, relevant experience, and research interests; a CV with publication list; university certificates including grades; and contact information for two references.
