About this position

Aarhus University’s Center for Quantitative Genetics and Genomics (QGG) is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to advance quantitative genetics for sustainable cattle breeding. The research addresses sustainability-related traits in dairy cattle, including feed efficiency, nitrogen efficiency, resilience and methane emissions.

The successful researcher will contribute to defining and analysing phenotypes generated through QGG’s farm-based infrastructure, which measures methane emissions, feed intake, feed and environmental parameters, productivity and novel traits in individual cows. The project includes genetic modelling, genotype-by-environment studies, variance component estimation and the integration of genetically related traits using digital tools, functional genomic information or omics.

The postdoctoral researcher will work within QGG, an interdisciplinary and international centre with expertise spanning plant, livestock and human quantitative genetics, quantitative genomics, artificial intelligence applied to agriculture, population genetics and integrative genomics. The role involves collaboration with national and international researchers, industry and commercial breeding organisations, as well as participation in project development and publication of research in peer-reviewed journals and at conferences.

The researcher may also support undergraduate and graduate teaching and co-supervise Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD students. The position is based at Aarhus University’s central campus in Aarhus, within a research environment supported by laboratories, specialised equipment, farm-based measurement infrastructure and high-performance computing clusters.

Funding details

This is a fixed-term, full-time two-year postdoctoral position from 1 March 2027 to 28 February 2029, with possible extension up to four years if the candidate is qualified and funding is available. Applicants must hold a PhD with a strong background in quantitative genetics and/or animal breeding, have published high-quality research in peer-reviewed journals, and have experience with at least one scripting language such as R, Python or Julia and/or genetic software such as DMU or ASReml. Candidates should be able to biologically interpret results and relate them to breeding decisions, demonstrate excellent teamwork and interdisciplinary collaboration experience, communicate complex scientific concepts effectively to academic, industry and public audiences, and show interest in teaching and mentoring BSc, MSc and PhD students. The application must be in English and include a CV, degree certificate, complete publication list, future research plans and research-activity information, teaching portfolio, and verified information about previous teaching experience if applicable.

How to apply

Prepare an English-language application with the required CV, degree certificate, publication list, research plans, research-activity information and teaching documents. Submit it through Aarhus University’s recruitment system using the direct application link before 29 November 2026 at 23:59 CET.
