About this position

Empa in Switzerland is advertising a postdoctoral researcher position in the Coating Technologies Group within the Laboratory for Surface Science & Coating Technologies. The project focuses on the development of thin films and advanced deposition processes using artificial intelligence, machine learning, and autonomous experiments.

The lab infrastructure includes sputter deposition and in-situ techniques such as RHEED, AES, and XPS, supporting advanced work on piezoelectric and ferroelectric nitrides.

Applicants should hold a PhD in a relevant field and have experience in PVD, surface science, Python programming, and strong communication skills in English. Experience with piezoelectric or ferroelectric nitrides, process development, and lab automation is an advantage. What's required

PhD degree in physics, materials science, chemistry, electrical engineering or a related discipline. Required or preferred experience includes UHV and thin-film technology, prior work in PVD and surface science, and proficiency in Python. Experience with piezoelectric or ferroelectric nitrides and PVD process development or pulsed sputtering is an advantage. Applicants should have excellent English communication skills, a strong academic track record and publication history, and interest in lab automation and agentic AI.
