About this position
This postdoctoral project focuses on developing new methods for offshore near-real-time seismic monitoring by combining in-well distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) with offshore seismological station data. The work addresses the challenge of observing seismic activity in offshore settings, where access is limited and instrumentation is sparse, by transforming existing fiber-optic cables into dense sensing arrays that can complement newly developed offshore stations.
You will work on integrating complementary observations through advanced signal processing, machine learning, and physics-based simulations to improve the detection, localization, and characterization of seismic events beneath the seabed. The project aims to create scalable workflows for offshore seismicity monitoring that can be applied in challenging marine environments.
The position is based in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Twente, within an interdisciplinary research environment spanning seismology, geophysics, signal processing, and geospatial data science. You will collaborate closely with researchers from KNMI and EBN, and work within a large Horizon Europe CETP consortium led by NORSAR. The role offers engagement with academic, governmental, and industrial partners, as well as opportunities to contribute to scientific publications, conference presentations, open-source algorithms, teaching, and supervision activities related to geophysical monitoring and data integration.

What's required
A (soon-to-be-obtained) PhD in seismology, DAS, deep learning related to Earth sciences, or a related field is required. Applicants should have good spoken and written English, the ability to handle and process seismological time series datasets, and programming experience in Python, MATLAB, C and/or Fortran. Experience with a major machine-learning framework such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, or JAX is required. Familiarity with inverse theory is desirable but not essential. The post also calls for curiosity in numerical methods for partial differential equations, big data management, and supercomputing facilities, together with strong conceptual, communication, problem-solving, organizational, independent, creative, and team-collaboration skills.
How to apply
