About this position
This postdoctoral opening in the Department of Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine focuses on improving subseasonal-to-seasonal prediction of precipitation for the west to southwest United States. The project examines processes in the atmosphere and ocean-atmosphere interactions that may improve forecasts on 2-8 week and 2-6 month time scales.
The scholar will work with Gudrun Magnusdottir and join a highly interdisciplinary research environment in Earth System Science. The work is carried out in close collaboration with an atmospheric/climate scientist, Yannick Peings, and a computer scientist, Erik Sudderth, together with graduate and undergraduate researchers in Earth System Science and Computer Science. The team is developing novel prediction approaches by integrating deep generative models of the ocean and atmosphere.
The project sits within a broad Earth system research community at UCI with expertise across coupled climate processes. It is designed for a researcher interested in climate dynamics, atmospheric prediction, and data-driven modeling, and offers the chance to contribute to both physical understanding and modern AI-based forecasting approaches.

What's required
An expected or recent PhD in atmospheric science or related fields, or a PhD in computer science, applied math, statistics, or related fields with demonstrated interest and publications in atmospheric/climate dynamics. Strong quantitative skills and detailed knowledge of teleconnections and climate patterns (tropical and extratropical) are required, along with excellent programming skills such as Python, the ability to manipulate and analyze large complex operational model output datasets, excellent verbal and written communication skills evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and presentations, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team. Experience with Global Climate Model experiments and/or AI-based weather prediction experiments on high-performance computing systems is preferred, and deep learning framework experience is a plus.
