About this position
The University of Vienna is offering a four-year predoctoral position in the research group Quantum Information Science and Quantum Computation, led by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Philip Walther in the Faculty of Physics.
The project focuses on experimental studies of quantum foundations and the development of scalable photonic quantum technologies. Research activities span quantum control of single photons using solid-state photon sources, integrated waveguide technology, tailored nonlinear media, superconducting detectors, and interferometric precision measurements of weak gravitational forces. The broader scientific context includes quantum information, quantum computation, quantum communication, quantum optics, and the interface between quantum physics and gravity.
The PhD candidate will develop new ideas and experiments, participate in a well-funded research project, prepare and present a research plan, and complete a dissertation agreement. The role also involves contributing to laboratory courses and exercise classes, academic writing, conference presentations, publications, outreach, and group administration.
The Walther Group is an international team of around 40 researchers working mainly on experimental topics in small subgroups. The group belongs to the Quantum Science group at the Faculty of Physics, the Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology, and the Austrian Cluster of Excellence quantA. The successful candidate will also join the Vienna Doctoral School in Physics and work within a community of more than 100 quantum scientists at the University of Vienna and approximately 300 quantum researchers across Vienna.
