About this position
The Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences is seeking a Professional Doctorate candidate to work on practice-oriented research in the maritime field, with a strong focus on predictive maintenance. The project sits at the intersection of academic research and day-to-day maritime practice, aiming to make technological developments more useful, safer, more sustainable, and more competitive in real operational settings.
You will join a multidisciplinary team at the Faculty of Technology in Amsterdam and contribute to multiple national and international research projects. The role is framed as the practice-oriented equivalent of a PhD track at a university, with research carried out at a university of applied sciences at the highest level. The work emphasises bridging the gap between academic solutions and the realities of the maritime sector.
In this project, maintenance decisions are approached from financial, environmental, and operational perspectives, with the goal of identifying when maintenance is most beneficial. The vacancy highlights the importance of combining academic and practice-based research to better understand and improve maritime operations and to support a safer and more sustainable sector.
The successful candidate will follow support courses to further develop research skills and will be supervised by a professor and fellow researchers within a collaborative, practice-oriented environment. The advert also signals that the position is suitable for experienced professionals from the maritime domain as well as academic staff seeking a further step in their research career.
