About this position

Research Associate in Genetic Vector Control at Imperial College London, Department of Life Sciences, Faculty of Natural Sciences.

This is a full-time, fixed-term research post focused on genetic engineering, mosquito control, and the development of self-limiting genetic strategies for the population suppression of Anopheles mosquitoes that transmit malaria. The programme is funded by the Gates Foundation and sits within a collaborative research environment with links to the Target Malaria consortium.

The successful candidate will conduct independent research in a small team, improving proof-of-principle technologies already developed, exploring new target genes, and developing novel molecular tools for next-generation vector-control approaches. The role includes experimental design, molecular and genetic assays, data analysis, maintaining accurate records, contributing to publications and presentations, and working with scientists, technicians, students, and external collaborators in the UK and internationally.

Required background: molecular biology and genetic engineering, including DNA cloning, genetic construct design, and CRISPR-Cas9 or related genome-editing methods. Experience with mosquitoes or other model organisms, transcriptomic data analysis, molecular/genetic assays, and basic bioinformatics/data analysis is required. Embryo microinjection experience is highly desirable.

Funding and terms: salary £50,733–£59,484 per annum; sector-leading benefits; 43 days off a year; generous pension schemes; 10 development days each year. The contract runs until 31 August 2028 and may be extended by 12 months depending on funding availability.

Application: apply via Imperial’s online recruitment portal. The posting closes on 3 November 2026, though it may close earlier if application volume is high. For questions, contact Dr Federica Bernardini or Ms Clelia Supparo by email.
