About this position
This research opportunity is hosted by the U.S. Army Research Laboratory’s Sensors and Electron Devices Directorate (SEDD) in Adelphi, Maryland. The project sits at the intersection of silicon carbide materials science, quantum device concepts, optoelectronics, and power-device integration, with a clear emphasis on enabling next-generation functional devices based on wide-bandgap semiconductors.
The advertised research directions focus on three closely related themes. First, the selected researcher may work on the epitaxial growth of low-strain, low-defect-density silicon carbide and the associated material characterization needed to support solid-state spin qubits in different SiC polytypes and device structures. Second, the project may address modeling and fabrication of photonic crystal nanostructures in SiC for quantum device development, including hybrid GaN/SiC optoelectronic sensors. Third, the research may involve hybrid device development and demonstration that integrates quantum, opto-electronic, MEMS, and/or power electronic components on the wafer scale.
The work is situated within a broader ARL mission to develop and exploit technologies relevant to sensing, electron devices, and the electromagnetic spectrum. SEDD’s research environment spans physics, electrical engineering, solid-state materials, and related device technologies, offering a setting where quantum materials, advanced semiconductor processing, and multifunctional device concepts meet. The opportunity is associated with Brenda VanMil as advisor.
Applicants are expected to bring experience relevant to one or more of the technical thrusts, especially epitaxial growth, semiconductor fabrication, magnetic resonance methods, or advanced optical/electrical/structural characterization. A research proposal is required later in the process for those selected by an advisor.

What's required
A doctoral degree is required, and the opportunity is open to candidates with a background in Physics, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or related fields. U.S. citizenship is required. Previous experience in at least two of the following is desirable: epitaxial semiconductor crystal growth (CVD, MBE), semiconductor processing (lithography, etching, deposition for photonic crystal structures or power/optoelectronic devices), magnetic resonance (ESR, NMR, ODMR), optical characterization (PL, SE, FTIR, Raman), electrical characterization (capacitance-voltage, Hall), or structural characterization (XRD, AFM, SEM, XPS).
How to apply
Submit the application through Zintellect. After submitting, you may contact Brenda VanMil by email for more information or guidance. If selected by an advisor, you will also be asked to prepare and upload a research proposal through the ARL-RAP process.
