About this position
Two Doctoral Positions in Tropical Forest Ecology, Animal-Plant Interactions and Forest Restoration at ETH Zürich in the Species Interactions and Ecosystem Health group.
The project, AniCaRes – Animating Carbon Restoration, is an SNSF Starting Grant project examining how animals shape tropical forest regeneration and carbon recovery. The research combines tropical ecology, animal-plant interactions, forest restoration, seed dispersal, molecular ecology, DNA metabarcoding/eDNA, animal monitoring, remote sensing, and ecological modelling.
There are two complementary PhD projects:
Doctoral position 1 focuses on animals, seed dispersal, nutrient cycling, soil microorganisms, and mycorrhizal fungi, with fieldwork primarily in Panama in collaboration with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI).
Doctoral position 2 focuses on herbivory, predators, seedling survival, plant community composition, and carbon recovery in regenerating tropical forests, with fieldwork primarily in Brazil.
Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in ecology, biology, environmental sciences, or a related discipline. The ideal candidate has a strong interest in quantitative ecological research and tropical ecosystems, experience with data analysis (preferably R and/or Python), excellent English, and willingness to conduct extended fieldwork in tropical environments. Experience with molecular lab work, DNA-based ecological methods, GIS, remote sensing, animal monitoring, experimental ecology, or ecological modelling is considered an asset.
The positions are funded according to ETH Zürich doctoral salary conditions.
Deadline: 10 November 2026. Apply online only via the ETH Zürich portal and include a CV, motivation letter, transcripts and degree certificates, and two referees. In the letter, indicate whether you prefer position 1, position 2, or both.
