About this position
Chalmers University of Technology is recruiting two doctoral students for the REACH project on vehicle energy estimation in real traffic. The project brings together engineering, data science and uncertainty quantification to improve understanding of where vehicle energy is used, how much can be saved and how reliable energy estimates are.
One PhD position is hosted by the Department of Electrical Engineering, Division of Systems and Control, and focuses on mechatronics. The researcher will model loads that drive energy consumption, including rolling resistance and aerodynamic drag, and examine how these factors vary under real driving conditions.
The second position is hosted by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Division of Vehicle Engineering and Autonomous Systems, and focuses on vehicle dynamics. The researcher will investigate how uncertainty in inputs such as predicted speed profiles propagates through overall energy estimates, developing methods to quantify and reduce that uncertainty.
Across both positions, doctoral students will develop and evaluate vehicle energy-consumption and efficiency models, analyse experimental, field and fleet data, and design simulations and estimation algorithms using model-based and/or data-driven methods. The work includes collaboration with supervisors, fellow doctoral researchers, research institutes, vehicle manufacturers and system suppliers, together with opportunities to present research at international conferences and in scientific journals.
Chalmers offers an international and collaborative research environment in Gothenburg, with strong expertise in engineering, natural sciences, automatic control, mechatronics, vehicle analysis, robotics, sustainable transport and autonomous systems. Doctoral students will also contribute to teaching and student supervision as part of their academic development.
