About this position
This ORISE fellowship places a selected researcher in the Blast Induced Neurotrauma (BINT) Branch at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Silver Spring, Maryland. The project focuses on understanding how blast overpressure affects the brain and related systems in both human and pre-clinical studies, with the broader goal of reducing exposure risk and improving force health protection for warfighters.
The fellow will work under the guidance of a mentor in a cross-disciplinary research environment that combines biomechanics, neurobiology, physiology, and behavioral science. The role includes hands-on participation in live-fire testing and operational training environments to measure blast overpressure, as well as simulation experiments that examine acute health and performance effects after blast exposure.
Research activities may include neurobehavioral testing, such as assessments of learning and memory, anxiety, motor function, and coordination; neurophysiological assessments including electroencephalography, auditory brainstem response, and electrophysiology; preparation of biological samples; and studies across lissencephalic and gyrencephalic species. The fellow will also contribute to data analysis, conference abstracts, and peer-reviewed manuscript writing.
Within the BINT Branch, the selected participant may engage in research on biomechanical and biological mechanisms of injury, neurosensory pathophysiology, genetic and neurodegenerative molecular cascades, interspecies scaling of injury, behavioral and sleep disturbances, wearable sensor technologies for blast monitoring, and countermeasure development and injury mitigation.
The position is embedded in WRAIR’s biomedical research mission and its ongoing efforts related to traumatic brain injury and repeated blast exposure.
