The University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ) invites applications for two fully funded PhD positions as part of the Australian Composites Manufacturing CRC project, titled “3D-Printed Thermoplastic Composites for Floating Marine Infrastructure.” This project aims to advance the development and application of fibre-reinforced waste thermoplastic composites for marine structures, with a strong emphasis on sustainability, durability, and performance optimisation. PhD 1: 3D-Printable Thermoplastic Composites Development, Characterisation, and Life-Cycle Assessment This research will focus on creating new 3D printable fibre-reinforced thermoplastic composites, evaluating their physical and mechanical properties, buoyancy, and degradation characteristics, including fire resistance. The project includes rigorous testing (tensile, compressive, flexural, impact, fatigue) to ensure suitability for marine environments and pontoon bases. Environmental durability and fire-resistant testing will assess performance under moisture, UV radiation, elevated temperatures, and accidental fires. A systematic life-cycle assessment will be conducted, covering environmental impact from raw material extraction to end-of-life disposal or recycling. PhD 2: Physical Wave Modelling and Design Optimisation of 3D Printed Thermoplastic Composite Flotation Modules This project emphasises advanced numerical modelling and simulation (FEM/CFD) to evaluate the performance of flotation modules under simulated and realistic wave conditions. Experimental validation will support the modelling, and the research will optimise structural design, material selection, and geometry to enhance durability, buoyancy, and overall performance. Candidates should have strong skills in experimental testing, computational modelling, programming (MATLAB, Python, or similar), and a solid understanding of composite material behaviour. Interest in design optimisation, advanced manufacturing, and sustainable materials is highly valued. Funding and Scholarship Details Successful candidates will receive a non-taxable living stipend of AUD $40,000 per year and a full tuition fee waiver for three years. The maximum tenure is three years, with any prior study towards the degree deducted from the award period. Tuition fees are paid by UniSQ for successful international students. Eligibility and Requirements Applicants must have completed an Honours Degree with First Class or 2A Honours, or equivalent, or a Master's degree with a significant research component. Candidates must have applied or be currently enrolled full-time on-campus in the PhD program at UniSQ and not be receiving equivalent support exceeding 75% of the stipend rate. The opportunity is open to Australian or New Zealand citizens, Australian permanent residents, and high-quality international students. Eligibility to commence or continue a PhD program by July 2026 is required. Selection criteria include demonstrated experience in polymer composites, engineering modelling, structural analysis, physical wave modelling, finite element analysis, fluid-structure interaction, or numerical simulation of marine or floating systems. High academic achievement and research capability (publications, presentations, internships, creative works) are expected. How to Apply Applicants should prepare digital copies of their CV (including research presentations/publications), a preliminary thesis topic proposal (contact Prof Allan Manalo, Dr Sachini Wickramasinghe, or Dr Shanika Kiriella for details), and academic transcripts. Applications must be submitted via the UniSQ Scholarship Application Management System by 31 July 2026. For assistance, download the Scholarship Online Application Manual.
