Postdoc in AI-Enhanced Solvent-Based Recycling of Polymers
This postdoctoral position at Eindhoven University of Technology offers an exciting opportunity to advance the field of polymer recycling through the integration of artificial intelligence and solvent-based processes. The project, conducted in collaboration with Exergy and as part of the EKKO Circular Plastics initiative, aims to develop and validate an AI-enhanced recycling process for complex plastic waste streams, including multilayer packaging and e-waste. The research focuses on the selective recovery of high-value polymers such as PET, PS, PC, and ABS at high purity, while minimizing solvent consumption and energy demand.
The successful candidate will join the Polymer Performance Materials group within the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry, and will be supervised by Professor Željko Tomović. The group is part of the interdisciplinary Institute for Complex Molecular Systems (ICMS), which brings together all polymer-related research at TU/e. The research activities will involve chemical, structural, rheological, and mechanical characterization techniques to assess the performance of recycled polymers. The project also leverages digital-twin and machine-learning tools developed by Exergy to create adaptive and scalable recycling processes.
The position offers full-time employment for 18 months, with a competitive salary (scale 10: €4,241–€5,538 per month), a year-end bonus, vacation pay, and a range of benefits including training programs, technical infrastructure, on-campus childcare, sports facilities, and support for international candidates. The university provides a vibrant, international research environment with strong industry collaborations and a commitment to high-quality education and research.
Applicants must have a PhD in organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, or a related field, with proven experience in synthesis and characterization of polymers or organic molecules. Strong analytical skills, creativity, initiative, and excellent English communication abilities are essential. The selection process includes interviews, a scientific presentation, and a writing assignment. Applications must be submitted online and include a cover letter, CV with publications, references, and up to five best publications. The position remains open until filled, with priority given to complete applications submitted by January 24, 2026.
