EngD in Prototyping Future AI-enabled Radiology Workflows

The Eindhoven University of Technology invites applications for an EngD position in Prototyping Future AI-enabled Radiology Workflows. This unique opportunity is designed for candidates passionate about improving healthcare through innovative design and technology. The project addresses the urgent need for high-quality healthcare solutions as patient volumes and medical data increase, outpacing the capacity of radiologists and pathologists. The focus is on integrating AI-based clinical decision-making tools into fast-paced, high-stakes clinical practice, ensuring seamless workflow integration and intuitive user experiences. As an EngD candidate, you will join a dynamic, multidisciplinary community of designers, researchers, engineers, clinical specialists, and business professionals. You will work closely with Philips Advanced Visualization & Insights, collaborating with design teams, hospitals, and clinical end-users. The program offers personalized learning through courses, coaching, and hands-on experience, surrounded by fellow EngDs and PhDs focusing on human-AI collaboration in healthcare. Two EngD positions are available: (1) Medical UX/UI Design Researcher & AI Designer, and (2) Creative Technologist. The first role emphasizes understanding clinical user needs, translating insights into UX requirements, UI design concepts, and interactive data visualizations, and creating clickable demonstrators. The second role focuses on front-end software prototyping, developing dynamic clinical workflow prototypes with medical data visualizations and interactive AI outputs, and leading prototype implementation for realistic clinical user experiences. Applicants must hold a Masters degree in a relevant discipline (Industrial Design, Interaction Design, UX-UI, HCI, Software Engineering, Computer Science/Engineering, or Industrial Design with strong technical focus) before September/October 2026. Required skills include conceptual design, UI/visual design, wireframing, clickable prototypes (Figma), data visualization, AI integration, user research methods, front-end development (React, data visualization tools), full-stack integration of LLM/VLM/agentic AI, backend systems, software architecture, and technical documentation. Soft skills such as collaboration, curiosity about healthcare, and a hands-on attitude are essential. English proficiency test results (IELTS or TOEFL) must be submitted. The position offers full-time employment for two years, a gross monthly salary of €3,029 (scale TOIO), year-end bonus (8.3%), annual vacation pay (8%), pension scheme, paid pregnancy and maternity leave, partially paid parental leave, personal development program, excellent technical infrastructure, sports facilities, commuting and home working allowance, and a tax compensation scheme (30% facility) for international candidates. The university is located in Brainport Eindhoven, a world-leading tech region with over 7,000 high-tech companies and strong R&D activity. To apply, submit a complete application online, including a cover letter, CV with publications and references, copies of BSc and MSc diplomas and transcripts, and English proficiency test results. Only complete applications will be prioritized. Applications sent by email or post will not be processed. The vacancy remains open until filled, with a deadline of July 25, 2026. For further information, contact Prof. Dr. Mathias Funk ([email protected]) or [email protected]. This EngD position is ideal for candidates eager to co-create the future of healthcare, leveraging design and technology to address real-world challenges in medical imaging and AI-enabled radiology workflows.
