About this position
This CNRS InSHS opportunity offers a 3-year doctoral employment contract in the humanities and social sciences at CNRS Sciences humaines & sociales in France. It is a paid doctoral position rather than a scholarship, and it includes a compulsory research placement abroad at one of the CNRS international units.
The scheme is designed for doctoral projects that combine research in France with an international mobility component. The placement abroad is intended to support the project through collaboration with a host institution, with funding available to help finance workshops, conferences and joint publications during the first years of the contract. The destinations vary by year and may include institutions in North Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Latin America and the USA.
The call is open across the humanities and social sciences, making it suitable for research in fields such as history, sociology, anthropology, economics, law, political science, linguistics, geography and psychology. The position is managed through a supervisor-led application process within the CNRS research environment, and the project must be linked to a specific foreign institution.
This is a selective doctoral route within the CNRS SHS network, with a small number of contracts awarded each year and a strong emphasis on the quality of the project, the supervisor’s support and the international host collaboration.

What's required
Applicants must be starting their PhD for the first time at the start of the academic year and must not already be enrolled in a PhD programme. Applications must be submitted by a supervisor, who must be a permanent member of a CNRS-linked research unit in France and authorized to direct PhDs at a French doctoral school. The call is open to all nationalities and all subjects within the humanities and social sciences, and the host institution abroad must sign the application. How to apply
You do not apply yourself; your supervisor must submit the application via the CNRS-NOA platform. The deadline for the 2026 round is 15 May 2026 at 14:00 Paris time. The CNRS InSHS selects the topics in June, and the supervisor then recruits the PhD student.
