About this position

BI Norwegian Business School is inviting applications for a four-year PhD scholarship in Accounting, with a planned start date in August 2027. BI is Norway’s leading business school and one of Europe’s largest educational institutions, with a strong research environment in accounting, economics, finance, strategy, marketing, and management.

The position belongs to the Department of Accounting and Operations Management, where the Accounting group is organised into two main research streams: quantitative research in financial accounting and auditing, and qualitative research in management accounting and control. The department highlights a strong publication record in leading accounting and finance journals, active research seminars, visiting scholars, and access to major international databases as well as unique Norwegian microdata.

The PhD specialisation in Accounting is designed for candidates aiming at academic careers, research-oriented organisations, or industry. The programme includes rigorous coursework in accounting, corporate finance, and econometrics during the first three semesters, followed by dissertation research that typically consists of three articles. Research is carried out in close cooperation with supervisors and faculty members, with opportunities to join seminars, workshops, and international research networks.

Funding is provided as a four-year doctoral scholarship according to the Norwegian State Salary Scale. The current salary is NOK 623,200 per year, subject to adjustment in 2027. The position is linked to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund and includes a 25% teaching obligation.

Eligibility highlights include a Master of Science degree with thesis work, a Research Masters/M.Phil degree, or an equivalent degree relevant to Accounting, completed by the time the programme begins in early autumn 2027, and a grade point average of B or higher. MBA degrees do not meet the admission requirement. Applicants are expected to have strong quantitative skills; GMAT or GRE is required for non-EU/EEA master’s degrees and encouraged for EU/EEA degrees. TOEFL or IELTS is encouraged. The school especially welcomes applicants with research interests in all areas of accounting, theoretical or empirical.

Application deadline: 2026-12-01.

Applications must be submitted electronically through the online application system. Required documents include a full CV, at least two recommendation letters, a statement of purpose, one selected academic work, degree certificates and transcripts, test results, and a signed verification document. Recommendation letters should be emailed to [email protected] by the deadline. For programme and admission questions, the Doctoral Administration can be reached at [email protected].
