About this position

Flinders University is offering a PhD scholarship in micro-architectural characterisation of zirconia dental crowns. The project is part of an NHMRC-funded collaboration involving Flinders University, Adelaide University, and The University of Queensland.

The successful PhD candidate will work at Flinders University under the supervision of Associate Professor Egon Perilli and will investigate additively manufactured zirconia dental crowns using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) imaging. This opportunity is especially relevant to applicants interested in biomedical engineering, materials science, dentistry, physics, and related imaging/characterisation fields.

Funding: The scholarship provides a tax-free stipend of $36,061 per year (2026 rate), paid fortnightly, for up to 3.5 years. A Research Training Program Fee Offset Scholarship covers tuition fees for Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens, and permanent residents. A fee waiver scholarship may be available for international students; otherwise international students pay normal tuition fees.

Eligibility: Applicants must meet PhD admission requirements and hold an Australian Honours degree Class 1 or 2A (or equivalent AQF Level 8 qualification) with a substantial research component, or demonstrate equivalent research experience. A background in imaging, materials characterisation, physics, engineering, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, advanced manufacturing, or related areas is desirable.

Deadline: Expression of interest closes 31 July 2026. The successful applicant must be able to commence full-time by November 2026.

How to apply: Email your expression of interest to [email protected] with a current CV and academic transcript. If selected, you will also need to apply for admission to a relevant PhD program at Flinders University.
