About this position
Monash University is offering a PhD scholarship in the area of quantum computing, with the project based at the Clayton campus in Melbourne. The research sits within the Scalable Quantum Systems Lab and is directed by Professor Muhammad Usman.
The project focuses on building efficient quantum compiler methods that bridge the gap between quantum algorithms and execution on quantum processors. The successful candidate will work on innovative quantum software components and reinforcement machine learning models for the transpilation of quantum circuits across different processor modalities and topologies.
A major aim of the project is to reduce the resources needed for quantum circuit execution, including the number of qubits and gates. This is a research-intensive opportunity within a broader program that includes applications of quantum computing to practical and defence-related contexts, and it brings the candidate into a group working alongside postdoctoral researchers and PhD students in the Faculty of Information Technology.

What's required
Applicants must be Australian citizens, permanent residents, or international students. A relevant four-year bachelor's degree with a research thesis/project and overall average equivalent to First Class Honours, or a relevant master's degree with a thesis/project equivalent to at least 25 percent of one year of full-time study and overall average equivalent to First Class Honours, or an equivalent qualification/professional experience as deemed by the GRC or delegate is required. Applicants must meet Monash University English language requirements, must not have previously completed a PhD, and must be able to commence the program in the year of the offer. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in machine learning, deep learning, and software programming, proficiency in Python and frameworks such as PyTorch, and knowledge of quantum computing or quantum algorithms is advantageous but not essential.
