About this position
Postdoctoral research opportunity at Karolinska Institutet in human uterine NK cell biology. The project is hosted by the research group of Professor Niklas Björkström at the Center for Infectious Medicine, Department of Medicine, Huddinge, where the team investigates human tissue-resident natural killer cells with a strong translational immunology focus.
The advertised scholarship position centers on uterine NK cells and their role in the endometrium and early pregnancy. The successful candidate will work with unique human material, including endometrium, decidua, menstrual blood and samples from uterus transplantation, in close collaboration with clinical units at Karolinska University Hospital. The research aims to understand how uterine NK cells arise, how they adapt to the cyclically regenerating endometrium, and what functions they perform in reproductive tissues.
The Björkström group combines immunology, reproductive tissue studies and high-dimensional analysis of human lymphocytes across tissues, with a particular focus on the uterus and liver. The environment is international and includes postdocs, PhD students and computational researchers. The work spans high-dimensional flow cytometry, single-cell and spatial omics, imaging and functional assays on primary human cells.
The project offers the opportunity to lead an independent line of research on topics such as uterine NK cell origin and tissue residency, phenotypic and functional changes across the menstrual cycle and early pregnancy, interactions with stromal, vascular and trophoblast cells, and alterations of the uterine immune milieu in reproductive disorders. The role involves collecting and processing human tissue samples, designing experiments, generating and analyzing multi-omic datasets, writing manuscripts, presenting findings internationally and collaborating across clinical and research teams.
Karolinska Institutet provides a strong medical research setting at Campus Flemingsberg, within CIM’s collaborative and well-equipped infrastructure.

What's required
A PhD in immunology, reproductive biology, cell biology or a related field is required, or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants must have solid knowledge of NK cell or innate lymphocyte biology, hands-on experience with multicolour flow cytometry and primary human cell or tissue work, the ability to drive a project independently while working well in a team, and excellent communication skills with proficiency in spoken and written English. Meritorious qualifications include experience with human reproductive tissues or reproductive immunology, single-cell RNA sequencing, spatial transcriptomics or spectral flow cytometry, computational analysis in R or Python, tissue dissociation, imaging, in vitro differentiation and co-culture models, and supervising students. The scholarship is for foreign researchers who come to Sweden and cannot be awarded to persons resident in Sweden or who have carried out all or part of their academic education at KI or another Swedish institution. Applicants who have not yet completed the doctorate may apply if all requirements for a completed degree are met before the intended start date.
