About this position
Karolinska Institutet is seeking one or two experimental immunologists for a postdoctoral scholarship in the Tumor Immunology and Immunotherapy Group led by Senior Lecturer Dhifaf Sarhan. The position is based at ANA Futura, Flemingsberg Campus, within the Department of Laboratory Medicine, Division of Pathology, in Sweden.
The research focuses on tumor immunology, immunotherapy and immune regulation in the tumor microenvironment. The successful researcher will investigate how innate and adaptive immune cells interact with tumor and stromal cells, including mechanisms of immune exclusion, immune suppression, immune memory and sex-dependent tumor immunity. The work connects patient-derived tumor material, single-cell and spatial profiling with mechanistic studies in human culture systems and mouse tumor models.
Responsibilities include leading an independent mechanistic project, designing and conducting experiments, interpreting data, preparing manuscripts, presenting findings, collaborating with experimental immunologists, computational biologists and clinical pathologists, and contributing to student supervision. Relevant methods include primary immune-cell culture, multiparameter flow cytometry, functional immune assays, genetic or pharmacological perturbation, tumor models and high-dimensional biological-data analysis.
Applicants need a PhD in immunology or a related field, strong experimental immunology experience, peer-reviewed original research, expertise with primary immune cells, flow cytometry and functional assays, independent research capability, effective communication and collaboration skills, and fluency in English. Experience with mouse or orthotopic tumor models, patient-derived material, organoids, imaging, single-cell or spatial profiling, and R or Python is advantageous.
This is a one-year, tax-free postdoctoral scholarship with possible extension subject to funding and scholarship rules. It is intended for eligible foreign researchers pursuing postdoctoral training in Sweden and is not an employment contract. Applications, including degree proof, CV, publication list and a one-page research motivation statement, must be submitted through Varbi by November 20, 2026.
Funding details

What's required
Applicants must hold a PhD in immunology or a closely related field, or a foreign degree equivalent to a doctorate. Candidates who have completed all degree requirements by the intended start date may also apply. The scholarship is intended for foreign researchers living outside Sweden who come to Sweden for postdoctoral education; applicants resident in Sweden or who completed all or part of their academic education at KI or another Swedish institution are not eligible. Required qualifications include strong experimental immunology expertise demonstrated by peer-reviewed original research, hands-on experience with primary immune-cell isolation and culture, multiparameter flow cytometry and functional immune assays, independent experimental design and analysis with appropriate controls and statistical methods, clear scientific communication, collaboration skills, and fluency in written and spoken English. Merits include mouse tumor models, orthotopic gastrointestinal cancer models, genetic or pharmacological perturbation, patient-derived tumor material, co-cultures, organoids or tumoroids, multiplex imaging, single-cell or spatial profiling, high-dimensional data analysis using R or Python, and supervision or interdisciplinary research experience.
How to apply
Submit the application in English or Swedish through the Varbi recruitment system by November 20, 2026. Include proof of doctoral degree, a complete CV, a complete publication list highlighting up to three relevant original research articles with contribution statements, and a one-page research and motivation summary.
