University College Cork is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher for a 24-month, whole-time fixed-term project in the School of Physics. The project, Macroscopic Quantum Science and Technology – MARQUIS , investigates the relationship between quantum spin liquids and high-temperature superconductivity. The research uses advanced quantum sensing and condensed matter physics techniques, including quantum spin noise spectroscopy, superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs), low-temperature...

Questions
Should I email professors before submitting my PhD application?
Yes. A well-targeted email can significantly improve your chances in many research-based programs.
What should I include in my first email to a professor?
A brief introduction, research interests aligned with the professor’s work, CV, and (if available) publication links.
How long should I wait before following up with a professor?
Typically 7–14 days. One polite follow-up is considered acceptable.
Is it better to send the same email to many professors?
No. Personalized emails that clearly match the professor’s research receive far better response rates.
Do I need a full research proposal when contacting professors?
Usually not initially — a short research summary is sufficient unless the professor specifically requests a full proposal.
