About this position
PhD Position in Experimental Nonlinear Dynamics and Nanomechanics at ETH Zürich
This opening is for a 100% fixed-term PhD position in the Spin Physics group at ETH Zürich, Zurich, Switzerland. The project sits at the intersection of physics, electrical engineering, nanomechanics, nonlinear dynamics, and statistical physics, with a strong experimental focus.
The research explores whether artificial neural networks can be built from driven nonlinear resonators. The lab works with electrical circuits and MEMS resonators implementing Kerr parametric oscillators (KPOs), studying attractor landscapes, switching statistics, probability currents, and collective dynamical patterns in coupled networks. The work connects nonequilibrium statistical physics with neuromorphic computing and dynamical Ising/Boltzmann-machine-like systems.
Responsibilities include building and operating a programmable network of coupled KPOs with up to eight nodes, developing control and readout electronics and measurement software, mapping dynamical landscapes from trajectories, and comparing experiments with simulations and analytical models in collaboration with theory partners at the University of Konstanz.
Applicants should hold, or be close to completing, an MSc in physics, electrical engineering, or a related field. A solid background in nanomechanics, nonlinear dynamics, or statistical physics is preferred. Hands-on experience with electronics, signal processing, and Python is important; MEMS, lock-in detection, and FPGA experience are advantageous. Strong English communication skills are required.
The position offers a four-year PhD appointment under ETH Zürich employment standards, with technical support from in-house electronics and FPGA experts, close supervision, and room for independent ideas. Applications must be submitted online and should include a CV, short motivation letter, BSc and MSc transcripts, and contact details for two referees.
No application deadline is stated in the post. Questions about the position can be directed to Alexander Eichler at [email protected].
