PhD opportunity: Hidden RAS conformations at the membrane at the Medical Research Council (Cambridge), Laboratory of Molecular Biology. This project focuses on RAS proteins , key molecular switches in human signalling and major drivers of cancer when mutated. The research asks how the plasma membrane shapes RAS structure, dynamics, and signalling, with an emphasis on detecting transient, low-population conformations that are difficult to capture by conventional structure determination. The stude...

About this position

PhD opportunity at the Medical Research Council (Cambridge), Laboratory of Molecular Biology, with Dr Ivana Bukvin in the area of protein folding, ribosome biology, structural biology, biochemistry, and single-molecule fluorescence.

This project focuses on how proteins fold on the ribosome in real time. The successful student will study co-translational folding as a nascent polypeptide emerges from the ribosome exit tunnel, using single-molecule Förster resonance energy transfer (smFRET) to capture structural and kinetic changes during translation.

Research activities include building an in vitro translation system, ribosome immobilisation, site-specific labelling of ribosomal subunits, genetic code expansion for fluorophore incorporation, and analysis of conformational exchange across nanosecond-to-second timescales. The project also combines FRET-derived distance distributions with molecular dynamics simulations to reconstruct atomistic folding trajectories.

The student will receive interdisciplinary training in single-molecule fluorescence, in vitro translation, protein biochemistry, structural biology, and computational collaboration. The advert states this is a competition funded PhD project for students worldwide.

Location: Cambridge, United Kingdom. Deadline shown on the page: 8 December 2026. Interested applicants should register their interest via the FindAPhD project page.
