About this position
Aalborg University is offering a three-year PhD stipend in experimental quantum materials physics within the Physics Group at the Department of Materials and Production in Aalborg, Denmark.
The project investigates how molecular complexes can be used to engineer quantum properties in materials. It addresses fundamental questions in quantum science while exploring knowledge relevant to future applications in electronics, sensing, and energy harvesting.
The PhD researcher will prepare and investigate molecular complexes on crystalline surfaces. Experimental work will include depositing molecular complexes by electrospray techniques under ultra-high-vacuum conditions and studying their structural and electronic properties using low-temperature scanning tunnelling microscopy and scanning tunnelling spectroscopy. The researcher will plan and conduct experiments, document methods and results, analyse and discuss data, and communicate findings within the research collaboration and through scientific channels.
The position sits at the intersection of molecular science, surface science, nanoscience, and quantum materials research. The successful candidate will carry out a substantial part of the work independently while collaborating closely with researchers in an international project funded by Independent Research Fund Denmark. The Physics Group provides an environment centred on experimental methods, scientific discussion, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the development of new knowledge with technological relevance.
The PhD is based in the Department of Materials and Production at Aalborg University and is expected to begin on 1 January 2027 or soon thereafter.

What's required
Applicants must hold a master's degree in physics, nanoscience, or a closely related field. Candidates should have a solid experimental background in physics, surface science, or nanoscience, with documented experience in scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy, ultra-high-vacuum techniques, cryogenic systems, surface science, and electrospray deposition. Applicants must be able to plan and conduct systematic experimental research, document, analyse, and interpret results, communicate clearly in English, work independently, and contribute constructively to an international research collaboration. The candidate must be eligible for enrolment as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science. The PhD programme includes 30 ECTS of courses, teaching or knowledge dissemination experience, and an external research stay outside Aalborg University, preferably for 3–6 months.
