[Home tuition fees plus a Doctoral Stipend for up to 4 years.] PhD Studentship at the University of Exeter in Editing the Alzheimer’s Epigenome: From Human Brain Variation to Functional Mechanisms . This studentship addresses a major question in Alzheimer’s disease research: which epigenetic changes observed in human brain actually alter gene regulation and contribute to disease biology. The project builds on cell-type-specific epigenomic datasets generated from human post-mortem brain using flu...

About this position

PhD opportunity in Oxford on RNA dysfunction in Parkinson’s disease, offered through the UK Human Functional Genomics Initiative FGx-DLA programme. The project, titled “One gene, many transcripts: decoding RNA dysfunction in Parkinson’s disease using single-cell ‘omics, CRISPR, and stem cell models”, combines single-cell genomics, bioinformatics, CRISPR-based experiments, and stem cell models to investigate how genetic variation shapes RNA regulation in disease-relevant cell types and how these effects contribute to genetic risk for Parkinson’s disease.

The project is based in Oxford, within the Oxford Parkinson’s Disease Centre (OPDC), providing access to a strong Parkinson’s research community and a collaborative environment. There is also potential for a placement at Roche, offering exposure to industry expertise in single-cell bioinformatics. The supervision team includes Sam Washer, Will Macnair (Roche), Richard Wade-Martins, and Sophie Farrow, bringing together complementary expertise across computational and experimental biology.

This PhD is fully funded for home fees. The advert particularly welcomes curious, enthusiastic candidates with an interest in combining computational and experimental approaches to study neurodegeneration. Applicants do not need to be experts in all areas already, so the position may suit students with strengths in biology, genomics, bioinformatics, or related fields who want to develop interdisciplinary skills.

Application deadline: 5 January 2027. Interested candidates should use the programme/application link and read the full project PDF for detailed project information, eligibility, and application guidance. Applicants are encouraged to contact Sam Washer or Sophie Farrow for an informal discussion before applying.
