PhD opportunity at the University of East Anglia in the School of Biological Sciences with Prof Alexei Maklakov. This project investigates postreproductive maternal care and how it may shape the evolution of sex differences in lifespan . Using wild nematode species, the research will test whether the sex that provides postreproductive care tends to live longer, combining comparative survival, reproduction, and provisioning data with custom genetic tools developed in the lab. Research themes incl...

PhD opportunity at the University of East Anglia in Evolutionary Genomics of Mimicry in Neotropical Catfishes , hosted by the School of Biological Sciences and supervised by Dr Martin Taylor . This project explores how mimicry evolves in Neotropical Corydoradinae catfishes, using comparative and population genomics to study repeated origins of similar colour patterns across more than 30 mimicry communities in South America. The research asks which genomic regions show divergent selection, whethe...

About this position

PhD opportunity in human biological evolution, culture, genetics, human genetics, behavioural biology, and evolution at Anglia Ruskin University (School of Life Sciences), Cambridge, United Kingdom, with supervision from Dr Jason Hodgson and Prof Andrea Manica (University of Cambridge).

The project asks how cultural variation in marriage practice may shape genetic and phenotypic variation in three traditional ethnic groups in Madagascar. Using existing social, cultural, genomic, and phenotypic data from 325 married couples, the student will examine whether marriage rules maintain biological differences among social groups or create a more biologically homogeneous community.

This is a funded PhD project offered through the Cambridge ESRC Doctoral Training Partnership (CAM-DTP). Funding includes tuition fees up to the UKRI Home rate, an annual tax-free stipend of £21,805 (2026–27 full-time rate), up to £900 for research training, a personalised training programme, and support for a three-month placement. Full-time and part-time study are both possible, and international students are eligible, though they must cover the fee difference and visa/health surcharge costs.

Helpful skills include computational work and programming in R or Python, though training can be provided. Applicants should have or expect a 2:1 Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience; a Master’s degree is desirable. The studentship is based at ARU in Cambridge, and students are expected to live within reasonable travel distance of campus.

To apply, contact Dr Jason Hodgson first to discuss the topic and your research proposal. Then submit an application through the ARU online portal by 15 November 2026, selecting the October 2027 entry option marked CAM-DTP Only. Do not apply directly to CAM-DTP. Required documents include transcripts, degree certificates, a personal statement, a research outline, a CV, passport/visa or EU Settlement Scheme share code if applicable, and referee email addresses.
