About this position
This PhD project investigates how the resident virome of insects shapes immune responses and fitness, and how this in turn influences interactions with incoming virus infections.
You will work on fundamental questions in insect virology using lepidopteran species as the study system. The project focuses on defining virome composition, testing how resident viral communities affect insect life-history traits and responses to infection, and examining vertical transmission of the virome across generations.
A major theme is transgenerational immune priming: you will study how incoming infections can influence immune protection in the next generation, and how the virome modifies that process. To answer these questions, the project combines virome sequencing, experimental infection work, microscopy, hybridization techniques, gene editing tools, and multi-omics analysis.
The PhD is based in the Insect Virology group within the Laboratory of Virology at Wageningen University & Research, and is co-supervised by the Laboratory of Entomology. The project is part of the NWO Vici project Invisible influencers: How hidden virus infections shape insect life, led by Dr. Vera Ros, and involves close collaboration with another PhD student and a postdoc. The wider research environment includes work on insect-virus interactions, virus discovery, covert viral infections, and biological control applications, within a large and internationally connected virology group.
You will contribute to experimental research, data analysis, teaching activities, and scientific communication in a multidisciplinary and collaborative setting.
