About this position

PhD position in the EU Doctoral Network PANDORA at the Institute for Ophthalmic Research, University of Tübingen, Germany.

The project focuses on age-related macular degeneration (AMD), with emphasis on factor H-related proteins (FHRs), extracellular matrix (ECM) stability, endothelial cell homeostasis, choroidal endothelial cells, retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells, complement biology, retinal degeneration, and translational biomedical research.

The successful candidate will build recombinant FHR protein libraries, optimize in-house cellular models of the outer blood/retinal barrier, and study effects on gene transcription, protein expression, cell morphology, ECM composition, diffusion, and angiogenesis. Techniques include human primary and stem cell-derived retinal models, qPCR, immunohistochemistry, western blot, in vitro assays, and metabolism measurements.

Eligibility: Master’s degree or equivalent in life sciences/biology/neurobiology/bioinformatics or related fields; strong background in cell biology and/or biochemistry; excellent English; motivation and ability to work independently and in a team. Hands-on experience with cell culture and molecular biology is required; complement system knowledge is a plus.

Funding: MSCA Doctoral Network support for 36 months with a competitive gross salary of about 3,924 EUR before taxes and social security deductions.

What's required

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in life sciences, biology, neurobiology, bioinformatics, or a closely related field. Strong background in cell biology and/or biochemistry is preferred, with hands-on knowledge of cell culture, molecular biology, and biochemistry techniques. Excellent oral and written English and good presentation skills are required. Candidates should be highly motivated, able to work independently and in a team, and have a strong interest in retinal degeneration, disease mechanisms, translational biomedical research, eye biology, neuroscience, and the complement system (which is a plus).
