About this position
This PhD project focuses on turning faecal sludge into clean cooking energy through the development and optimisation of faecal sludge briquettes (FSB) for use in Kenya and Ethiopia. The research sits within a transdisciplinary effort to support waste-to-energy innovation, resource recovery, and a just energy transition in East Africa, where dependence on firewood and charcoal contributes to deforestation, environmental degradation, climate impacts, and serious indoor air pollution.
The PhD candidate will work on a laboratory-intensive programme centred on improving FSB as an alternative cooking fuel. The project involves characterising faecal sludge from different sanitation facilities to understand variability in its physico-chemical and microbial properties, then using that knowledge to define pre-treatment needs and feedstock suitability. The candidate will also test locally available binding materials and develop briquette formulations that improve strength, calorific value, storage stability, and emissions performance.
The work is framed by the broader challenge of scaling up sustainable sanitation and energy solutions in urban East Africa. It connects technical development with the practical realities of fuel adoption, and is embedded in a research programme that aims to support wider uptake of faecal sludge briquettes as a cleaner and more resilient cooking fuel.
The PhD is based at the Environmental Technology group at Wageningen University & Research, with partner-institute stays in Kenya and Ethiopia as part of a sandwich PhD structure.
